The method

The TARGET System

A six-step approach to adverse events — designed to keep patients on treatment instead of reducing or interrupting their dose.

What it is

Turn adverse events from a reason to stop into something you can control

Dr. Christine Boers-Doets training a care team at a whiteboard

The TARGET System is a structured, six-step method for managing the side effects of cancer therapy. I developed it for the mucocutaneous adverse events of targeted agents — but the same logic can be applied to almost any adverse event.

Its goal is simple and specific: bring side effects under control without reaching first for dose reduction or interruption — ideally getting a reaction under control within around 48 hours.

The six steps

T · A · R · G · E · T

T

Terminology

Define the adverse event precisely. Shared language is the foundation of everything that follows.

A

Assessment

Systematically evaluate what the patient is experiencing, not just what the protocol expects.

R

Reporting

Record adverse events consistently across clinic and research so nothing gets lost.

G

Grading

Score severity in a way that actually guides the response — not just a number for the file.

E

Education

Prepare patients and teams in advance, so early signs are recognised and acted on.

T

Treatment

Intervene early and appropriately to keep the patient on their planned therapy.

The TARGET System Book

In The TARGET System Book (IMPAQTT, 2014) I set out the full six-step approach and the thinking behind it, illustrated through the mucocutaneous adverse events of targeted therapy. It is both a method and an account of what it takes to become an adverse-event expert.

Who it’s for

Built for the people at the sharp end of care

Oncology & nursing teams

A shared, practical language and workflow for preventing and managing side effects at the bedside.

Research & trial teams

Consistent terminology, reporting and grading that stands up in clinical protocols.

Homecare & industry

A framework to carry expertise beyond the hospital as more cancer care moves into the home.
